Lewis Hamilton plays down speculation
McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has denied media speculation that he is set to leave the team and insist that contract talks are on-going.
Last week, it was Mercedes that the 2008 world champion was being linked with, with some sections of the press believing it was pretty much a done deal. However, Hamilton has moved to deny these rumours and insists he is a McLaren driver until someone tells him different.
"I think we're all wise enough to understand that people write things and that what is written is not necessarily what is true," Hamilton said. "There's a lot of speculation, there's a lot of stories that aren't true."
"I've been with the team since I was 13 and we've worked so hard since 2009 to try and win this championship and hopefully, finally, we're in the position where we can.”
Hamilton is busy concentrating on the title it might be wise at the moment. The Stevenage-born racer is currently second in the standings and won the last Grand Prix in Italy, prior to that he won in Hungary, with a retirement in Spa sandwiched in-between having been forced out on the first lap through no fault of his own.
The last thing Hamilton needs to do now is let his season get derailed by some contract speculation as it is vital he keeps his focus. It would seem the 27-year old is doing just that and maintains that the contract discussions are in other people’s hands, while he just concentrates on the driving.
"So the most important thing is that I do not get distracted by all the rubbish that's been around,” added Hamilton.
"I don't have a timeline. My focus is on trying to win this world championship.
'Of course I do have to have those things sorted out but I do have people in the background working on those contract negotiations."
